Yes, there was some mixing of the commits for the two orthogonal changes.
I also added to the confusion by over-using the terms "old" and "new"
in my reviews instead of spelling out what I meant.

Okay, let's go with this option.

You'll have to start by rebasing the topic since commit bb4260c9
was already put in next and reverted.
