Yes, the most efficient way is using conditional setting. For example:

if (CMAKE_SIZEOF_VOID_P EQUAL 4)
  set(import_path /to/lib32)
else()
  set(import_path /to/lib64)
endif()

set_property(TARGET foo PROPERTY IMPORT_LOCATION "${import_path}/lib.so")
