I'd prefer using the PARENT_SCOPE option here, which will make the
variables available in the parent CMakeLists.txt.
set(foobarSRCS foo.c bar.c PARENT_SCOPE)
set(foobarLIBS ${externalLibFound} PARENT_SCOPE)
