[CMake] Switch compiler for subdirectory

In my project, I typically use the cl compiler provided by MSVC9.  I have one target that I have to use gnu make and gcc to produce a .dll that I link to with the rest of my build system.  How might one switch the compiler for just one subdirectory tree?  Does it still go through all the checks to ensure the compiler can build a small test program, etc?
