Thats complicating things a lot for a few simple tasks..

emerge 2.4 or whatever u want to have that stable version

Use the version controlled unstable in a source/build/install dir in your home 
dir or somewhere else you can write to, like /opt perhaps. 

Simpler, and easy to redo, delete and control. No need to set up an overlay 
and all you need to do is specify the path to the cmake binary you want to 
test with.
