I just checked the file doc/cmake-2.4/cmake.html in 
http://www.cmake.org/files/v2.4/cmake-2.4.6-Darwin-universal.tar.gz
and it correctly documents CLEAN_DIRECT_OUTPUT.  Are you referring to 
some other package?  If so, you should check it; if it is erroneous, 
take it up with the package maintainer.  Otherwise, perhaps you had an 
installation problem, on top of an older CMake or something?
