[CMake] help installing cmake

I follow the instructions of Install page 
(http://cmake.org/HTML/Install.html) and with cmake 2.4.7 downloaded and 
untar I run "cmake ."
but it shows this:

# cmake .

The C compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" is not able to compile a simple test program.
It fails with the following output:

CMake will not be able to correctly generate this project.

I have gcc and I have used it many times:

# gcc -v

The environments variables seems well:
