Thank you much for this info, Alex.

But, holy !$%!%$!#@%#%.  This is infuriating!  I chew up my evening 
reinventing the wheel, because this stuff ISN'T IN THE DOCS, and ISN'T 
ON THE WIKI "USEFUL VARIABLES" PAGE!

Kitware, you know exactly what I would say, what I am tempted to say.  I 
will restrain myself from saying it.  Please, over the next year, do 
something about this.  For my part, I will continue to file "Content" 
bug reports when things aren't documented, and update wiki entries when 
I can.
