[Cmake] Platform/Compiler specific values

Hi,

what is the recommended way of defining/providing different sets of
platform and/or compiler specific variable (default) values. I found
somewhat different approaches in vtk, itk etc. Common to them, they
INCLUDE some *.cmake files somewhere in  CMakeLists.txt, bit I was
wondering, if a certain style of grouping platform/compiler variable
values is recommended.
