However, linking errors aren't caught by ctest--it's only check for
pass/fail is running the executable. So, if I specify exec1 as the
executable, but exec4 fails to link, the test would still pass. Which
leads to your other suggestion:

Is there a convenient, platform independent way of doing this? Looking
at how CMake itself executes programs, there is non-trivial effort
involved. I'd rather not duplicate all that effort in the test
program.
