Thanks.  However, it is too late to restore this change for the 3.6
series.  3.6.1 reverted the change.  We can re-introduce it for 3.7
so that it can go through another round of release candidates.

Please rebase on `master` and include all needed changes as if this
change were being made for the first time, including the restoration
of the tests.
